President Bola Tinubu has congratulated the winners of Saturday’s area council elections in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the by-elections held in Rivers and Kano states, urging them to justify the confidence reposed in them by the electorate.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President called on the victorious candidates to serve with humility, patriotism and dedication, describing their mandate as a sacred trust bestowed by the people.
Tinubu commended the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, for what he described as transformative achievements in the territory, noting that the administration’s performance had translated into political gains for the governing All Progressives Congress (APC).
He also congratulated the APC’s national leadership, as well as its Kano and Rivers state chapters, for their performance at the polls.
The President praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), security agencies and voters for ensuring the peaceful and orderly conduct of the elections. He further lauded all contestants for their courage and discipline, stressing that democracy thrives on active participation and healthy competition.
According to INEC, elections were conducted across the six area councils of the FCT for chairmanship and councillorship positions. By-elections were also held in Ahoada East II and Khana II state constituencies in Rivers State, as well as in Kano Municipal and Ungogo constituencies in Kano State.
In the FCT results, INEC declared the APC winner in the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Kwali and Bwari area councils. However, in Gwagwalada Area Council, Mohammed Kasim of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) emerged victorious.
The Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, announced that Kasim secured 22,165 votes, defeating his closest rival, Yahaya Shehu of the APC, who polled 17,788 votes.
Tinubu noted that the successful conduct of the elections further strengthens Nigeria’s democratic institutions and called on INEC to continue refining the electoral process to deliver even more credible and exemplary elections in the future.
