The Presidency has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, suffered a stroke and was flown abroad for treatment.
Presidential spokesperson Chief Sunday Dare debunked the rumours on Monday evening, confirming that the minister is in Abuja, recuperating and “responding well to treatment.”
Taking to his verified X handle, @SundayDareSD, the presidential aide shared that he had personally spoken with the minister earlier in the day.
“Moments ago, I got off the phone with Nigeria’s Finance Minister/CME, Mr. Wale Edun, in Abuja. Over a bowl of amala, we spoke for a few minutes with assurances he was getting better. I wished him the best of health,” Dare posted, signing off humorously as “Sunday Dare Alamala Reporting.”
Dare’s good-humoured message helped to calm growing online speculation about Edun’s health, which had fuelled a wave of misinformation across social media platforms over the weekend.
Presidency sources earlier told journalists that while the minister was “indisposed,” he had neither suffered a stroke nor travelled abroad for medical attention.
Mr. Edun, a key figure in President Bola Tinubu’s economic reform team, is reportedly resting at home in Abuja and remains in contact with senior officials at the Ministry of Finance.
The latest update from the Presidency reinforces assurances that Nigeria’s chief economic policy driver is on the path to full recovery and continues to monitor critical national economic matters.
