Arsenal legend Paul Merson has predicted that the Premier League title race could be effectively settled within the next two weeks, backing his former club to go all the way this season.
Merson believes Mikel Arteta’s side are in pole position to lift the trophy, having won seven of their first nine matches and sitting four points clear at the top of the table. The Gunners have also been solid defensively, conceding just three goals in 14 games.
Speaking to newsmen, Merson said his confidence in Arsenal’s title credentials has only grown after their strong results against major rivals.
“I said on 19th September that if Arsenal get four points out of their games against Manchester City and Newcastle United, they win the league,” Merson said.
“Arsenal did it and I stand by what I said. In fact, the title race could be done and dusted in the next two weeks!”
Arsenal will take on Burnley and Sunderland before the international break, while title rivals Liverpool face Aston Villa and Manchester City.
“I expect Arsenal to win both games and I’m not backing Liverpool to win this weekend,” Merson added.
“If City and Liverpool take points off each other in gameweek 11, I think Arsenal will win the league quite comfortably.”
