Ahead of the 2027 elections, the Presidency is enforcing a resignation deadline for political appointees seeking elective offices, aiming to uphold transparency and compliance with electoral laws.
President Bola Tinubu has mandated all political appointees with electoral ambitions resign from their positions by March 31, 2026.
The directive was issued through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and aligns with Section 88(1) of the 2026 Electoral Act, as well as the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable for party primaries.
“President Tinubu calls on all political appointees with electoral ambitions to comply promptly.
“This step underscores the administration’s commitment to strengthening democratic institutions and delivering credible elections”, the statement added.
The order affects a wide range of officials, including ministers, ministers of state, special advisers, senior and ordinary assistants, personal aides, directors-general, and chief executives of federal agencies, parastatals, and government-owned companies.
Those required to step down must submit formal resignation letters through the Secretary to the Government of the Federation by the March 31 deadline.
The Presidency emphasized that the measure is designed to promote fairness, ensure transparency, and provide a level playing field for all election aspirants.
