The Cross River State Police Command says an autopsy will be conducted on the remains of 22-year-old Moses Mba, who was recently shot by a policeman attached to the residence of Governor Bassey Otu.
Mba was reportedly shot in the leg on August 1 by a policeman guarding the governor’s residence.
Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua, disclosed this in an interview with journalists in Calabar on Saturday. He explained that the autopsy is necessary to determine the exact cause of death.
“Yes, shooting may be involved, but we need to know what caused the death,” Afegbua said. “We have concluded plans to carry out an autopsy to ascertain if he really died from gunshot injuries. The outcome will be made public.”
Reacting to the incident, the state Commissioner for Information, Erasmus Ekpang, stated that the late Mba was “not mentally balanced”.
Speaking to newsmen, the deceased’s mother, Victoria Mba, said her son had gone to the governor’s residence insisting on seeing him.
“He was beaten, shot, and left unattended right in front of the governor’s residence,” she alleged. “It was an official of the Red Cross Society who eventually rushed him to the hospital”.
She explained that her son died on August 9 at the Naval Reference Hospital in Calabar from injuries sustained in the shooting.
“Before his death, he told me and my husband that he only wanted to see the governor because he had a message for him from God. We are calling for justice, nobody has the right to take another person’s life. Justice must be served”, she said.
