The Police Service Commission has denied claims that senior police officers paid ₦5 million each to secure promotion to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police.
The allegations, published by Sahara Reporters, suggested that officers bribed commission officials to advance from Chief Superintendent of Police to ACP.
In a statement on Sunday in Abuja, the commission’s Head of Protocol and Public Affairs, Torty Kalu, described the report as “unfounded” and a reckless attempt to tarnish the reputations of both the commission and the Nigeria Police Force.
The statement emphasized that promotions from CSP to ACP strictly follow due process and established guidelines, and that references to the immediate past Inspector-General of Police were “mischievous” and intended to lend credibility to baseless claims.
“The role of the Inspector-General of Police in the promotion process is limited to forwarding recommendations based on vacancy and performance; final approval rests with the commission”, the statement clarified.
The PSC also said it is considering legal action against Sahara Reporters over alleged defamation and urged the public to disregard the report, reaffirming its commitment to merit-based promotions and effective oversight of the Nigeria Police Force.
