The Ondo State Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into the midnight attack on a church in Ondo State that left five worshippers abducted.
Commissioner of Police Adebowale Lawal confirmed that efforts are underway to identify the assailants and uncover the motive behind the assault. He assured residents that details would be made public once investigations are concluded.
“Investigation is ongoing on the perpetrators, and by the time we conclude our findings, we will be able to reveal their identities and the motive behind the attack,” Lawal stated.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday when armed men reportedly stormed a branch of the Celestial Church of Christ during a night service. The attackers abducted five congregants and fled to an unknown destination, triggering fear and outrage within the community.
In response, the police have advised residents to temporarily suspend late-night religious gatherings, urging that services be held during daytime hours to reduce vulnerability.
“That church in Owo was attacked at about 2 a.m., which is contrary to the security advice we have consistently given,” the commissioner said. “We are appealing to residents that, for now, religious activities should be conducted during the day.”
While reaffirming citizens’ constitutional right to freedom of worship, Lawal stressed that prevailing security realities require caution — particularly for services held in isolated locations at night.
“We are not saying people should not worship. You have the freedom to do so,” he explained. “However, the situation on the ground does not support organising worship in the middle of the night, especially in remote areas. If such gatherings must hold, organisers should notify the police so we can provide adequate security.”
The abduction sparked public anger, with residents taking to the streets in protest. Demonstrators barricaded the busy Akure–Owo Expressway, leaving commuters stranded for hours as they demanded swift government intervention and improved security measures.
Authorities say security patrols have been intensified in the area as efforts continue to rescue the abducted worshippers and restore calm.
