In a statement, Bashir Usman says the insurgents storm the villages on Wednesday in an attempt to rustle cattle but meet resistance from residents.
He explains that the attackers enter the area from Gudu Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
“The command deeply regrets the loss of thirty-three innocent lives and extends its heartfelt condolences to the families affected and the entire Arewa community,” the statement reads.
According to the police, armed Lakurawa militants invade Mamunu, Awasaka, Tungan Tsoho, Makangara, Kanzo, Gorun Naidal, and Dan Mai Ago communities, triggering a deadly confrontation after residents mobilise to defend their villages.
The police command warns that incidents involving armed criminal elements require coordinated security intervention and urges residents to report suspicious movements rather than confront attackers directly.
Security operatives have since been deployed to the affected areas.
The attack follows a similar incident in March 2025 when six members of a vigilance group are killed by bandits in Dan Tulu and Rusakde villages in Arewa LGA of Kebbi State after a cattle rustling episode.
