Heavily armed police officers have cordoned off the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja, following a dramatic clash between two rival factions of the party on Tuesday.
A visit to the PDP headquarters at Wadata Plaza on Wednesday revealed that officers had erected barbed-wire barricades around the complex, effectively preventing entry into the building. Only a small number of policemen stood guard as the premises remained largely deserted.
None of the leaders from the two contending factions was seen at the secretariat, heightening speculation that tensions within the party’s hierarchy remain unresolved.
However, a chieftain of the faction loyal to Kabiru Turaki condemned the police action, insisting that the barricade was unacceptable.
He vowed that members of the Turaki-led bloc would resume activities at the secretariat regardless of the restrictions, declaring: “We will come to our office. No one can stop us.”
The situation underscores the deepening leadership crisis within the PDP as police maintain tight control over the party’s headquarters.
