The National Police Service (NPS) traffic department has announced the closure of roads leading to the Nyayo National Stadium, the venue of this weekend’s World Rugby Sevens Division II Nairobi Sevens.
NPS assistant superintendent, Silas Bundi said Douglas Wakiihuri Road, formerly Aerodrome Road, will be closed to motorists starting Friday midnight.
Bundi said Mombasa Road as well as Lang’ata Road will be closed partially between Lusaka and Bunyala roundabouts.
“This is to ensure safe movement of those who will be coming to the stadium,” the traffic commandant said on Wednesday, warning all those who have no business at the Nyayo National Stadium to avoid the match venue.
Bundi further said traffic police will be deployed to ensure smooth movement of vehicles to appropriate routes.
Bundi, who was accompanied by NPS assistant inspector general, Edward Achola, was briefing the media at the Nyayo National Stadium on the security arrangement for two-day tournament.
Bundi advised those who will want to access the Central Business District (CBD) from Mombasa Road to use alternative routes as he urged the road users to cooperate with the traffic police.
“There will be no parking at Nyayo Stadium hence I advise those coming for the event to either park at the city centre or somewhere far from the venue that is convenient to them,” said Bundi.
Achola said they will have two entry points on Mombasa Road and two along Lang’ata Road.
“We have Gate A for VIPs and Gate B for VVIPs. Gate C will be for officials and teams only,” said Achola, adding that the rest of the gate will be open for fans. “We shall have five exit points to make sure there will be free flow of movement from the arena,” explained Achola.
Achola urged fans without tickets to stay at home so as to avoid unnecessary confrontations with the police.
Meanwhile, the government has shut down Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani for final renovations ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).
Principal Secretary for Sports Elijah Mwangi said on Wednesday that Nyayo National Stadium will also be closed for final touches for the Nations Cup after the World Rugby Sevens Division II Nairobi leg was held over the weekend.
He was speaking at Nyayo where he announced a Sh100m government sponsorship for the Nairobi Sevens rugby tournament.
Mwangi disclosed that the government had already closed down MISC but allowed its use for the CAF Confederation Cup match between local club Nairobi United and Visiting Wydad Casablanca from Morocco on Sunday.
Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania will co-host the 2027 Afcon.
