Poland has called for an emergency session of the UN Security Council after accusing Russia of an “unprecedented” violation of its airspace by suspected drones, the Foreign Ministry confirmed on Thursday.
The appeal comes after a dramatic incident on Wednesday in which Polish air defenses, backed by NATO allies, shot down multiple drones that crossed into the territory of the European Union and NATO member state.
“We are drawing the world’s attention to this unprecedented Russian drone attack on a member of the UN, EU, and NATO,” Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told local radio, adding that Poland had previously raised similar concerns and that its case “remains compelling.”
Moscow has denied responsibility. A senior Russian diplomat in Warsaw claimed the drones entered Polish territory from the direction of Ukraine, where Russia has waged a full-scale war since its 2022 invasion.
While Russia’s Defense Ministry acknowledged conducting a large-scale drone strike on Ukrainian military targets in the country’s west, it insisted none were aimed at Poland.
The incident has deepened fears of the war spilling beyond Ukraine’s borders, testing NATO’s collective security commitments and fueling fresh concerns of a dangerous escalation in Eastern Europe.
