Paul Pogba is expected to make his long-awaited return to competitive football this weekend, with Monaco confirming that the midfielder will be listed in their squad for Saturday’s Ligue 1 clash with Rennes. The club’s plan is to ease him back into action by allowing him a brief appearance if match conditions permit.
The 32-year-old has not played an official game since September 3, 2023, when he featured for 28 minutes in Juventus’ victory over Empoli. His career was abruptly halted shortly afterward when he returned a positive test for DHEA in August 2023. The failed test led to a four-year suspension handed down in February 2024.
Pogba later took the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), where the punishment was reduced to 18 months—paving the way for his gradual reintegration into football. Since completing the majority of his ban, the former Manchester United star has been working toward full fitness under Monaco’s supervision.
He participated fully in Thursday’s training session and is expected to undergo another complete workout on Friday. Provided there are no setbacks, the French midfielder will travel with the team to Rennes for the league fixture.
Pogba had initially been in line for a return against Angers before the recent international break. However, a minor ankle issue suffered in training ruled him out of that opportunity, delaying his comeback slightly.
Monaco will be hoping the World Cup winner’s phased reintroduction helps strengthen their midfield options as they continue their domestic campaign.
