Governor Caleb Mutfwang has vowed that Plateau State will not be driven into fear following the deadly attack in Angwan Rukuba, Jos North, which left 28 people dead.
Addressing residents in a statewide broadcast on Tuesday, the governor spoke with deep emotion, describing the killings as a painful blow to the state but insisting that Plateau would remain united and determined in the face of violence.
“It is with a heavy heart and profound sorrow that I address you today following the tragic security incident in Angwan Rukuba, which led to the loss of 28 innocent lives,” Mutfwang said.
Sending a firm message to those behind the violence, he declared that the state would not surrender to intimidation.
“Plateau State will not succumb to fear or intimidation. We shall emerge stronger, united, and resolute in our commitment to peace.”
The governor described the assault as a senseless act carried out against unsuspecting, law-abiding citizens, noting that the attackers struck around 7:30 p.m., targeting innocent residents and leaving families devastated.
According to him, the government has already activated urgent security measures to restore order. Security agencies have been deployed across affected areas, while a 48-hour curfew has been imposed in Jos North to allow security personnel conduct intensive operations and prevent further violence.
Mutfwang disclosed that he personally visited the scene of the attack alongside top security chiefs to assess the situation firsthand and strengthen strategies aimed at preventing similar incidents.
He also visited injured victims receiving treatment at Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he expressed optimism over their condition.
“I am encouraged by reports that most are in stable condition,” he said, adding that the Plateau State Government will fully cover the medical expenses of all those injured.
On the issue of justice, the governor confirmed that one suspect has already been arrested and assured residents that everyone connected to the attack would be pursued and prosecuted.
“We are committed to ensuring that all those involved in this heinous act are swiftly brought to justice.”
He further pledged government support to bereaved families, promising dignified burial arrangements for victims and assistance for dependents left behind.
“We stand firmly with you and shall continue to provide the necessary support.”
Commending residents for resisting retaliation despite the provocation, Mutfwang praised the people’s restraint as a critical step toward preserving peace.
“Your restraint and refusal to retaliate even in the face of provocation is deeply appreciated.”
As part of broader security efforts, the governor directed strict enforcement of the existing ban on commercial motorcycle operations within the Jos Greater Master Plan, noting that security agencies would soon release operational guidelines.
He also urged citizens to remain alert and actively support security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities.
“Security is a collective responsibility. I urge all citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements.”
Reaffirming his administration’s resolve, Mutfwang stressed that the government would continue working closely with security agencies to restore calm, apprehend perpetrators, and prevent a recurrence.
He concluded by calling for unity across Plateau, describing the tragedy as a reminder that peace can only be sustained through shared responsibility, vigilance, and collective action.
