Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has been formally inducted into the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the presentation of his membership card at a ceremony held at the Government House, Jos.
The card, numbered 001, was presented to the governor at the Victoria Gowon Hall, where a large crowd of APC stakeholders, party leaders, and prominent political figures from within and outside Plateau State gathered to witness the historic event.
Addressing the audience, Governor Mutfwang described his decision to join the ruling party as divinely inspired and motivated by the overall interest and progress of Plateau State.
“This decision came after fervent prayers, extensive consultations, and strict adherence to the constitution of the party. I have wholeheartedly embraced the APC as a platform to promote peace, unity, and sustainable development in Plateau State,” the governor said.
Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, Mutfwang paid glowing tribute to his supporters, describing the contest as one of the most challenging in the state’s political history due to intense rivalry and prolonged legal battles that eventually ended at the Supreme Court.
“Our victory in 2023 was purely by the grace of God. I remain deeply grateful to all those who laboured tirelessly, made sacrifices, and stood firm through the storms,” he added.
‘Not an Act of Enmity’
The governor also expressed appreciation to his former associates in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stressing that his defection should not be interpreted as an act of hostility or betrayal.
“This is not about enmity. It is about broad-based consultation and the collective interest of Plateau State,” Mutfwang said.
Calling for unity ahead of the 2027 general elections, he urged political actors across party lines to embrace peace, credible electoral processes, and issue-based politics. He expressed confidence that Plateau State would deliver overwhelming support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Mutfwang reaffirmed his support for the President, acknowledging the nation’s security and economic challenges but commending Tinubu for taking deliberate and bold steps aimed at improving the lives of Nigerians through progressive governance.
The presentation of the APC membership card to the governor is widely regarded as a significant turning point in Plateau State’s political history and a major boost to the ruling party’s influence in the state. Observers say it signals fresh political realignments ahead of future electoral engagements.
Party leaders and supporters at the ceremony described the development as the beginning of a new phase in Plateau politics, with expectations of stronger party cohesion and expanded political participation under the APC platform.
The APC had earlier announced Governor Mutfwang’s defection from the PDP in December, a declaration made by the party’s National Chairman, Nentawe Yelwata, who hails from Plateau State. Yelwata announced the move during the APC’s 14th National Caucus Meeting held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.
According to Yelwata, Mutfwang’s defection means that the entire North-Central region is now governed by the APC.
Governor Mutfwang, who was elected under the PDP in the 2023 elections, now joins the growing list of governors who have crossed over from the main opposition party to the APC, alongside Peter Mbah (Enugu), Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), and Umo Eno (Akwa Ibom).
