Fresh security concerns have emerged in parts of Plateau State following a series of violent incidents in Barkin Ladi and Riyom local government areas.
In response, the state government has urged residents to remain calm and refrain from reprisals, warning that retaliatory actions could deepen tensions. In a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, authorities condemned the attacks, describing them as “barbaric and senseless acts that have no place in our society”.
Jatau said the incidents, which reportedly claimed several lives, were particularly troubling given ongoing peace-building efforts in the state.
“These unfortunate events are occurring at a time when sustained dialogue and reconciliation have significantly improved the relative peace across Plateau. We will not allow the actions of a few to undermine the progress we have made”, he stated.
The government also referenced a separate disturbance in Jos North Local Government Area, noting that it further heightened public anxiety. According to Jatau, the governor has directed security agencies to intensify operations in affected communities.
“Security presence will be strengthened, and those responsible for these cowardly acts will be apprehended and brought to justice”, he said.
Reaffirming its commitment to stability, the government appealed for cooperation from residents. “We urge citizens not to take the law into their hands but to work with security agencies to restore and maintain order”, the statement added.
