A small aircraft that took off from Canada has crashed in Greenland, killing its sole occupant, the Danish airport authority Naviair confirmed on Monday.
The plane, carrying only one person, vanished from radar on Saturday while flying over the island of Sermitsiaq, located north of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, according to Naviair.
“This morning, the crash site has been located, and unfortunately, there are no survivors,” the authority said in an official statement.
Search efforts had been hampered over the weekend by thick fog and poor visibility, delaying rescue teams from pinpointing the wreckage.
Local media reported that the crash site was finally identified once the weather cleared, revealing the aircraft on the steep slopes of Sermitsiaq Mountain — a rugged area difficult to access.
“The plane was found on the mountain, but at a site that is currently inaccessible, which makes it difficult for authorities to take further action,” said Brian Thomsen of the Greenlandic police, in an interview with the newspaper Sermitsiaq.
Officials have yet to release the identity of the victim, and investigations are ongoing to determine what caused the crash.
