Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Idah Peterside has backed Nigeria to defeat Gabon in the 2026 FIFA World Cup playoffs, while also tipping Cameroon to overcome DR Congo in the other semifinal fixture.
Speaking on Soccer Beat, Peterside said he expects a Nigeria–Cameroon showdown in the final stage, describing both nations as traditional African powerhouses.
“Congo will play Cameroon, and Cameroon is a superpower in Africa,” Peterside said. “So we hope Cameroon will beat DR Congo, and it would be Nigeria vs Cameroon. In that light, you would see that Africa is producing a giant.
“Africa is bringing strong teams because South Africa has qualified. There is Tunisia, Morocco, Egypt, and Ivory Coast — that’s what we are saying; the big boys must come to the big boys’ party.”
The World Cup playoffs are scheduled to take place on November 13, with the winners of both matches facing off in the final qualifying round on November 16.
