The internal crisis within the Labour Party (LP) deepened on Monday as the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Abayomi Arabambi, declared that former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, would not be handed the party’s ticket in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking during an interview with newsmen, Arabambi insisted that the LP is not tied to Obi’s political ambition, stressing that the party can chart its own course without him.
“We are going to do our 2027 without Peter Obi; he will not have our ticket,” Arabambi said.
The LP spokesman accused the party’s acting National Chairperson, Nenadi Usman, and activist Aisha Yesufu of colluding with Obi, vowing that the party leadership would take decisive steps to expel them.
Challenging Obi to openly declare his political future, Arabambi claimed that the former Anambra governor was already “double-dealing” with other political platforms.
“Obi has one leg in Labour Party, one leg in PDP, and one leg in ADC,” Arabambi alleged. “If he truly believes he has the capacity to win seven million votes in 2027, then he should boldly announce his exit from the Labour Party.”
According to him, the momentum behind the LP’s strong 2023 outing was not solely Obi’s doing, but rather the result of public frustration following the EndSARS movement and discontent with former President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
“Obi only found Labour Party as a vehicle of opportunity at a time Nigerians were yearning for change. He was just fortunate to be at the helm,” Arabambi added.
The remarks signal growing rifts within the Labour Party as the 2027 elections approach, raising questions about Obi’s next political move and the party’s future direction.
