The 2023 Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed the historic importance of Ibadanland to Nigeria’s socio-economic and political development.
Obi stated this during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan-designate and former Governor of Oyo State, Oba Rasidi Ladoja, at his Ondo Street, Bodija residence in Ibadan.
Accompanied by LP chieftain Yunusa Tanko and prominent Igbo indigenes, Obi commended the contributions of Ibadan sons and daughters—both at home and in the diaspora—to the growth and progress of the country.
“The place of Ibadan in Nigeria’s history cannot be overlooked,” Obi declared. “This city has always stood as a symbol of hospitality, unity, and national influence. From politics to commerce, Ibadan has shaped the direction of our nation. It is blessed with illustrious leaders like Oba Ladoja, who has served Nigeria as a governor and senator, and who now steps into a higher calling as the 44th Olubadan.”
The former Anambra governor expressed confidence that Oba Ladoja’s wealth of experience would bring dignity, stability, and progress to Ibadanland.
“I believe his reign will attract the support of people across Nigeria,” Obi said. “For my part, I will offer all possible assistance to ensure that Oba Ladoja’s tenure as the 44th Olubadan is successful and impactful.”
In his response, Oba Ladoja described his ascension as an act of divine grace and a continuation of his lifelong service to humanity.
“That I am alive today is a testimony to God’s grace,” the Olubadan-designate said. “It is not wealth or influence that makes a king, but the will of God. This throne, to me, is not about glamour or ceremony—it is about service.
The era of glamour is gone. Now, it is about what one can bring to the table for the people.”
Oba Ladoja pledged to dedicate his reign to the welfare of his people, emphasising that leadership, whether political or traditional, must always be rooted in service.
