In a decisive political move, Peter Obi has declared his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), signaling his official platform for the 2027 presidential elections. Speaking in Enugu, Obi vowed to lead Nigeria toward meaningful change through competent and honest governance.
The former Anambra State governor made the announcement at a special event organized by Southeast stakeholders from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). He emphasized that his move was not a defection, noting that he had been involved from the beginning in discussions and meetings that led to the formation of the coalition that became the ADC.
Obi said he would use the platform to rescue Nigeria from poor leadership, stressing that “a new Nigeria is possible” and vowing to ensure meaningful change because “our commitment is about Nigeria”. He described December 31, 2025, as “an important day” to declare his political platform.
The former presidential candidate criticized beneficiaries of the current democratic system for being complicit in its weaknesses but pledged: “We cannot allow the destruction of democracy in Nigeria. We will resist rigging in 2027 by every means possible”.
Addressing pre-election concerns, he added: “We have a pre-election period now to resolve every issue concerning the qualification of candidates for the 2027 poll”.
Obi urged Nigerians to unite behind competent leadership, highlighting the need for truthfulness, trust, and integrity in governance. Citing Indonesia and Rwanda as examples of countries that overcame challenges through effective leadership, he expressed confidence that Nigeria could achieve similar transformation.
Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar welcomed Obi’s move, describing it as “a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country.
He encouraged other patriots to join the coalition as it “leaves Enugu, the capital of the Southeast region.”
