Arsenal legend Per Mertesacker has confirmed his intention to step down as the Head of the Academy following the conclusion of the current campaign. The former German international, who transitioned into his leadership position at Hale End immediately after retiring from professional football in 2018, notified the club’s hierarchy of his decision to pursue new professional challenges.
Mertesacker’s eight-year tenure as the chief of youth development significantly strengthened the bridge between the academy and the first team, facilitating the emergence of several high-profile graduates under the “Strong Young Gunners” philosophy.
The 41-year-old World Cup winner issued a heartfelt message to the Arsenal faithful on Monday, expressing his deep personal connection to the North London institution. Despite his impending exit, the club confirmed that Mertesacker will remain in his post through the summer to oversee a structured transition. Arsenal CEO Richard Garlick praised the outgoing manager’s leadership, noting that the search for a successor is currently underway as the club seeks to maintain the momentum established during Mertesacker’s influential term.
“Arsenal is and will always be a very special club to me, so this was a difficult decision. I am very thankful for the trust the club put in me,” Mertesacker stated via Fabrizio Romano.
Mertesacker first arrived at the Emirates Stadium in 2011 after a successful stint with Werder Bremen, quickly establishing himself as a cornerstone of the Arsenal defense. The towering center-back earned a reputation for his exceptional reading of the game and composed distribution, features that defined his 170 Premier League appearances. His leadership on the pitch helped the club secure three FA Cup trophies and three Community Shield titles, with his most notable playing contribution being his heroic performance in the 2017 FA Cup Final.
During his tenure as Academy Head, Mertesacker prioritized the development of character alongside technical ability, famously advocating that “better people make better players.” This holistic approach resulted in the promotion of several first-team regulars and helped the academy navigate a period of significant structural change. While his departure represents a major shift in the club’s sporting hierarchy, the foundations he laid for recruitment and talent identification remain a vital part of the club’s long-term strategy.
“I am very thankful for the trust the club put in me when transitioning from a first-team player directly into the role as Head of Academy. Now it is time for me to move on and explore something new and push myself even further. I remain focused on finishing the season strongly, continuing to nurture and develop our young talent and support a seamless transition until my very last day with the club,” Mertesacker added in an official club statement.
