A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, Umar Sani, has insisted that the party will participate in the 2027 general elections despite its ongoing internal crisis, arguing that electoral success ultimately depends on “the war chest of the people who want to contest.”
Speaking during an interview with ARISE NEWS on Wednesday, Sani dismissed suggestions that the PDP has lost its prospects in the next presidential race due to its internal disputes and shrinking number of governors.
According to him, what determines the success of any candidate is not how long they have been in the race but the level of preparation and resources available to them.
“We still have a presidential aspirant like Hashim. He’s a presidential aspirant. He has been working tirelessly to broker peace,” Sani said. “In essence, it depends on the war chest of the people who want to contest, because contest is not about length of time. It’s about preparation before the time and being able to know what you want at the time.”
His remarks come at a time when the party faces growing uncertainty about its political strength ahead of the 2027 elections, amid speculation that key figures such as Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed could reconsider their political alignments.
However, Sani insisted that the PDP remains capable of mounting a serious contest, emphasising that strategic preparation and financial capacity will play a decisive role in determining the outcome of the next election cycle.
