The Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP has rejected a caretaker committee set up by Nyesom Wike’s faction, branding it illegal and a breach of party rules.
In a statement on Monday, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, said Wike’s faction demonstrated “clear contempt for the court” by announcing a National Caretaker Committee, claiming authority they do not legally possess.
The Turaki-led NWC was elected at the PDP national convention in Ibadan on November 16 for a four-year term, with the backing of party governors, who ensured a smooth handover from former chairman Umar Damagum before his tenure ended on December 9.
Despite this, Wike and his allies, including Mohammed Abdulrahman and Senator Samuel Anyanwu, went ahead on Sunday to appoint themselves and others to a 60-day caretaker committee.
Ememobong said, “The purported constitution of a so-called National Caretaker Committee by Nyesom Wike and his friends is clearly designed to coordinate their personal political affairs. By attempting to cloak it in the name of the PDP, a party that had duly expelled them, they have acted without authority and in contempt of the court”.
He added that Wike and his allies had filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja on November 21, 2025, seeking to nullify the Ibadan convention. Their application for an interim injunction was refused, with the court warning against actions that could undermine its eventual judgment.
The Turaki-led NWC described the move as part of a continued pattern of illegal actions:
“This latest action is a further deepening of the trenches of illegality they have been digging since 2023, aimed at obstructing the PDP and advancing the interests of the ruling party. The PDP remains firmly on a path of rebirth, anchored on transparency, equity, honesty, and inclusiveness”.
The party reassured members and the public that all legitimate organs of the PDP, including the National Executive Committee and the Board of Trustees, remain intact under Turaki’s leadership.
