Following a period of internal reflection and restructuring, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it is prepared to return to power in the 2027 general elections.
The declaration was made by the PDP National Chairman, Kabiru Turaki, during a meeting with former PDP governors and ministers who served under previous party administrations.
Turaki said the party had carefully reviewed its past shortcomings and embarked on a rebuilding process aimed at correcting mistakes and strengthening its internal cohesion ahead of future elections.
“This is a new PDP,” he said. “Having admitted that mistakes were made, it means we are now ready to correct those mistakes.”
He assured Nigerians that the newly elected National Working Committee (NWC) is committed to repositioning the party and returning it to the people, stressing that the PDP remains open to ideas, advice, and constructive engagement.
“I want to assure Nigerians that the PDP is their party. Please take back your party and tell us what you want”, Turaki said.
According to him, the party’s path to recovery and electoral success will be anchored on transparency, equity, fairness, and justice in its relationship with Nigerians.
“We will ensure transparency. We will ensure equity. We will ensure fairness, and above all, justice in our engagement with the Nigerian people,” he added.
The PDP chairman expressed confidence that the party would benefit from the experience and guidance of its elders, noting that during its years in government, the PDP built strong institutions and recorded economic growth, factors he said continue to fuel public confidence in the party.
Speaking on behalf of former PDP governors, former Niger State Governor, Mu’azu Aliyu, criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), accusing it of poor leadership and failure to meet the expectations of Nigerians.
Aliyu said the PDP has a responsibility to restore hope to citizens, adding, “It is our duty to ensure that by 2027, we have done well enough to give succour, give hope, and truly serve the Nigerian people”.
