Tensions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has escalated as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, dismissed the relevance of major political parties in Rivers State, insisting that both the PDP and the All Progressives Congress (APC) “don’t exist” in the state.
Wike made the remarks during a meeting at the Ikwerre Local Government Headquarters, where he was welcomed with chants of “No Wike, no Rivers State”. He told the gathering, “If you are pursuing Wike, you’ll miss the road. There is nothing like PDP or APC in Rivers State. Every week, I’ll be coming to Rivers State. Abuja is not my place; it’s where I work. I’ll be home every week”.
The FCT Minister also addressed a recent statement by Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, highlighting the widening rift within the PDP. Makinde had said he would not follow Wike in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid and affirmed his continued commitment to the PDP.
He stressed that while Wike is entitled to his political choices, others within the party remain free to follow their own paths.
Makinde clarified that he would not assist in organising the APC in Oyo State, reiterating his loyalty to the PDP even as Wike’s position appears aligned with the ruling party.
