Former Arsenal midfielder Paul Merson has expressed surprise at Mason Mount’s inability to make an impact since joining Manchester United, describing the England international’s decline in form as unexpected.
Mount, a product of Chelsea’s academy, rose to prominence at Stamford Bridge, where he became a key figure under former managers Frank Lampard and Thomas Tuchel. The 25-year-old was instrumental in Chelsea’s 2021 Champions League triumph, earning a reputation as one of the Premier League’s brightest midfield talents.
After an 18-year association with Chelsea, Mount moved to Old Trafford in the summer of 2023 for a fee reported to be around £60 million, with United fans hopeful he would add creativity and energy to their midfield. However, his time in Manchester has been marred by injuries and inconsistent performances.
Despite being used in five of United’s opening six league matches this season by manager Ruben Amorim, Mount has struggled to find his rhythm. Merson believes the magnitude of playing for United is often underestimated.
“I don’t think people understand how big the club is,” Merson said on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast.
“They get signed for big money and they come in. I’m a Chelsea fan and Mason Mount was unbelievable for us, unbelievable!
“He goes to Man United and he’s probably had two good games in two seasons and can’t even stay fit.”
Mount came on as a late substitute in United’s 3-1 defeat to Brentford on Saturday, a result that has intensified scrutiny on the midfielder’s form and fitness.
