Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has claimed that Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, would have thrived at Chelsea instead of struggling at Old Trafford.
Speaking on Sky Sports, Merson noted that Amorim’s system is ill-suited to United’s current squad, contributing to the club’s disastrous run since he replaced Erik ten Hag.
United finished 15th in the Premier League last season, lost the Europa League final to Tottenham, and have collected just 31 points from 31 league games under the Portuguese manager. Speculation continues to swirl over his future, with the club enduring their worst start since 1992-93.
By contrast, Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has enjoyed remarkable success, winning the FIFA Club World Cup, the Conference League, and leading the Blues back to the Champions League.
“He would have been a perfect fit for Chelsea,” Merson said.
“They’ve got world-class wing-backs in Reece James and Malo Gusto, and the best holding midfielder in the league in Moises Caicedo. At Man United, the system doesn’t suit — the wing-backs are nowhere near it, no legs in midfield. Everything is up against him.”
