Police in Delta State say 15 individuals have been taken into custody over their alleged involvement in sexual assaults in the Oramudu area of Ozoro, an incident that has triggered widespread condemnation and concern among residents.
Authorities insist the acts were purely criminal and have no link to any recognised cultural practice.
The arrests followed a directive from the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, who ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident. A special operations team was deployed to review evidence, including video footage and intelligence reports, leading to the identification and capture of the suspects.
Among those arrested is the alleged mastermind, Omorede Sunday, along with several others believed to have participated in the attacks.
Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said preliminary findings indicate that the suspects took advantage of the situation to carry out acts of sexual violence, dismissing any attempt to justify the incident on cultural grounds.
He described the development as a major step forward in the investigation and reiterated the Command’s commitment to ensuring justice for the victims.
Adesola has condemned the incident, assuring the public that all those involved will be prosecuted. He also urged members of the community to support ongoing investigations by coming forward with useful information, promising that the identities of witnesses and victims will be protected.
The incident has renewed concerns about the prevalence of sexual violence and the factors that often prevent victims from reporting such crimes, including stigma and fear of retaliation.
