The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has revealed that a total of 148,077 electricity customers were metered nationwide in May and June 2025, pushing the total number of metered users in the country to 6,422,933 as of the end of June.
The data was published in the Commission’s latest metering factsheet, released on Wednesday, offering an updated snapshot of metering progress across the country’s 12 electricity distribution companies (DisCos).
According to the report, 63,180 customers received meters in May, while 84,897 were added in June, representing an upward trajectory in metering efforts.
During the same period, Nigeria’s total number of active electricity customers also saw a marginal increase, rising from 11,784,842 in May to 11,821,194 in June, reflecting continued growth in energy consumption across households and businesses.
Among the DisCos, Ikeja Electric emerged as the top performer, boasting the highest metering rate at 84.65%, followed closely by Eko DisCo (83.33%) and Abuja DisCo (73.06%).
At the opposite end of the spectrum, Yola DisCo recorded the lowest metering rate at just 28.55%, with Jos and Kaduna DisCos posting similarly low rates of 29.51% and 33.46%, respectively.
The report also highlighted Aba Power Limited (Aba DisCo) as the most improved within the two-month period. Its metering coverage jumped from 37.88% in May to 45.17% in June, following the installation of 12,376 new meters.
Benin DisCo crossed a significant milestone during the same period, increasing its metering rate from 49.95% to 50.33%, finally entering the half-metered customer bracket.
Millions Still on Estimated Billing
Despite the overall progress, NERC warned that seven out of the 12 distribution companies still have less than 50% metering coverage, leaving millions of customers at the mercy of estimated billing, a practice that has long been criticized for its lack of transparency and fairness.
The Commission has consistently called for accelerated metering across all regions to address consumer complaints and improve the integrity of billing systems in Nigeria’s power sector.
