Opposition lawmakers in Nigeria’s House of Representatives have expressed concern over what they describe as the non-execution of the 2025 budget, warning that senior finance officials could be held accountable.
In a statement jointly signed by caucus leaders Hon. Fred Agbedi and Hon. Afam Ogene, the lawmakers said a strategic meeting is scheduled for Tuesday night at 8:00 p.m. to discuss urgent national and legislative issues.
The caucus indicated that deliberations will focus on fiscal governance, oversight of the Executive, and the performance of the House’s minority leadership. A key item on the agenda is the reported failure to implement the 2025 budget, despite prior approval of all loan requests submitted by the Executive. Members are expected to scrutinize claims that funds earmarked for capital projects were not released as promised.
The Opposition Caucus is also considering demands for greater accountability in the finance sector, including a possible motion to remove the Minister of Finance and the Accountant-General of the Federation. The officials are accused of failing to honor commitments to the House that capital allocations would be executed and outstanding payment obligations cleared before the end of the year.
Additionally, caucus members plan to request copies of all bills passed by the 10th Assembly, along with votes, proceedings, and gazetted laws, citing recent amendments to tax laws as a reason for the review.
The meeting will also assess the performance of the minority leadership, amid concerns that some leaders may not have met caucus expectations. Lawmakers are expected to explore corrective measures where necessary.
