Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has announced that Onitsha Main Market will reopen on Monday, February 2, after being closed for several days. The temporary shutdown, ordered by the state government, came in response to traders’ continued participation in the Monday sit-at-home exercise, which has disrupted economic activities across the state.
A press statement signed by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, reads in part: “This is to inform the general public that the closure of Onitsha Main Market, ordered by Mr. Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, CFR, lapses this weekend”.
The closure affected thousands of traders and shoppers, halting the normally bustling commercial activities of one of West Africa’s largest markets. Government officials stated that the action was intended to enforce compliance with state directives and ensure public safety, while also sending a message against repeated disruptions to economic life.
Traders, many of whom expressed frustration over the closure, are now preparing to resume business. The reopening is expected to restore normal trade, boost local commerce, and reassure residents and investors of the government’s commitment to maintaining order in the state.
Officials have urged both traders and customers to adhere to public health guidelines and state regulations as operations at the market resume.
