Nigerian singer Omawumi Megbele, popularly known as Omawumi, has credited ace music producer Cobhams Asuquo for playing a defining role in shaping her music career.
Speaking in a recent interview on HipTV, the Bottom Belle crooner reflected on her early days in the industry and how a chance encounter with Cobhams opened new doors for her.
“Cobhams gave me one of my first opportunities outside Idol West Africa,” Omawumi said. “When we met, he said, ‘Omawumi, this is Cobhams Asuquo, you know he likes to funkify his name. There’s a song I want you to do. It might not come out as anything for now, but let’s just go with it.’”
That collaboration, she revealed, became a turning point. The song caught the attention of a major brand, earning her a two-year ambassadorial deal and a chance to perform as an opening act for P-Square in four different locations.
“I did the song, and then the agency picked it up. I became a brand ambassador for that product for two years. I opened for P-Square in four locations,” she recalled.
Beyond the opportunities, Omawumi said Cobhams’ mentorship taught her vital lessons about vocal expression and stage presence.
“Cobhams taught me a lot of nuances when it comes to delivery and posture,” she added.
The singer’s revelation highlights the long-standing influence of Cobhams Asuquo in nurturing Nigerian musical talent, with his creative direction credited for shaping several of the country’s biggest stars.
