Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has shared the story behind his Grammy-nominated collaboration with Davido, revealing that he initially assumed the superstar didn’t like him.
The misconception quickly dissolved, paving the way for their hit song With You. Speaking to OkayAfrica on the GRAMMY red carpet, an interview shared by HYPETRIBE on Monday, Omah Lay explained that a clip of Davido reacting positively to his music changed everything.
“I thought we had a beef. I thought he didn’t like me,” Omah Lay said. “It was funny, and we connected so well after that. Boom, magic happened.”
Describing their work together as effortless and organic, he credited the collaboration’s success to the natural chemistry between them.
When asked about his Grammy expectations, Omah Lay acknowledged the strong Nigerian representation in the Best African Music Performance category. “Me and Davido, of course. But Burna is there, Ayra is there, Wizkid is there. Any of us, I mean, we are repping Nigeria,” he said.
Despite the star-studded nominations, the award ultimately went to South African singer Tyla for her hit Push 2 Start.
