Afrobeats singer Omah Lay has described the Nigerian music industry as “full of egos,” explaining that the environment has influenced his decision to maintain a small and selective circle of friends.
Speaking during a recent appearance on the Nando Leaks podcast, the “Soso” crooner said his personality and outlook on life set him apart, making it difficult to form close relationships within the industry.
According to the singer, he does not rely on external validation and prefers to connect only with individuals who genuinely understand his perspective and ambitions.
“I have a very weird personality. I believe I am just that guy, so I don’t have a lot of friends,” he said. “I don’t talk to a lot of people, just very few people, and those people are people who try to come into my world and understand where I am going.”
Omah Lay acknowledged that he also has a strong sense of self, admitting that he carries a significant ego despite his calm and reserved nature. He noted that managing this trait is important to avoid it becoming a barrier to his growth.
“The Nigerian music scene is full of egos. I am a chill guy, but I have too much ego. It is hard to make friends like that,” he added.
His comments offer insight into the interpersonal dynamics within the industry, where competition and personal branding often shape relationships among artists.
