Nigerian rap icon Olamide has stirred fresh controversy in the Afrobeats community after declaring Grammy-winning singer Wizkid the greatest artist in the genre after the late Afrobeat pioneer, Fela Kuti.
The YBNL boss, speaking during a press conference in Canada, reflected on his long-running collaboration with Wizkid and praised their creative synergy. “I am blessed to have collaborated with Wizkid on multiple occasions. You know Wizkid is the greatest Afrobeats artist ever after Fela,” Olamide said.
He emphasized that their partnership goes beyond industry strategy, explaining that their music connection has always been natural rather than a matter of leverage.
Olamide’s statement has since ignited a lively debate on social media, especially among fanbases of the industry’s biggest stars. His comment comes just weeks after Burna Boy described himself as the greatest African artist after Fela, while Davido has repeatedly referred to himself as the “King of Afrobeats.”
Supporters of Wizkid, Davido, and Burna Boy have taken to various platforms to argue over who truly holds the title of Afrobeats’ leading figure, with Olamide’s endorsement adding fuel to the already heated conversation.
The discussion continues to trend as fans weigh in on what defines greatness in a genre that has taken the world by storm.
