
The Oko Community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State has announced the official burial arrangements and final rites of passage for the late Onowu of Oko, Ichie Martin Ezeosim.
The burial is scheduled for October 9, 2025, following the joint announcement made by HRH, Igwe Prof. Laz Ekwueme, Eze Ijikala II, along with the Oko People’s Union (OPU) and the deceased’s family.
A Statement by Chief (Sir) Reuben Muoka, Chairman, Publicity Sub-Committee, Onowu Oko Burial Committee indicates that ‘the late Onowu Oko, who served as the traditional Prime Minister and was second in command to the Igwe of Oko, passed away at the age of 78. His leadership and unwavering dedication greatly contributed to the development of the Oko community.’
The funeral rites are set to commence at Alex Ekwueme Civic Centre, Oko, following a Christian burial ceremony in his hometown of Eziabo Village, Oko. A dedicated committee has been established to oversee the arrangements for a respectful and dignified ceremony. This committee is chaired by Chief Larry Iloh, a member of the Oko Council of Chiefs, and comprises prominent members from various sectors of the Oko community.
Igwe Prof. Ekwueme expressed his condolences to the entire community, lamenting the loss of a revered and industrious leader whose contributions spanned numerous areas of community development and governance. He called on the committee to ensure that the rites celebrated are fitting for the esteemed Onowu Oko.
Nze Sunday Nwafor, President of OPU, joined in honoring the memory of Onowu, highlighting his commitment to a humble Christian life, exemplary character, and bravery, which he believes should serve as a model for others in the community.
Chairman of the Burial Committee, Chief Iloh, emphasized the community’s gratitude for the late Onowu’s incomparable contributions and promised that every effort will be made to ensure a significant turnout of Oko sons, daughters, and friends to pay their final respects.
