The Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Justice, Ethics and Public Petitions has launched an inspection tour of communities affected by the Lagos State Government Water Pipeline Project in Ifo 2 Constituency, where residents have raised concerns over the project’s environmental and social impact.
Led by committee chairman Oluseun Adesanya, lawmakers visited Akute, Baale, Alausa, and Oke-Aro on Wednesday to personally assess the extent of environmental degradation caused by the ongoing works.
The field visit follows weeks of deliberations and prior engagements with key stakeholders, including officials of Lagos Water Corporation, the project contractor Salini Nigeria Limited, and representatives of the affected communities.
During the tour, Adesanya, alongside colleagues Folawewo Salami, Samsideen Lawal, and Dickson Awolaja, met with members of the Baale Akinosi Area Community Development Council to hear firsthand the hazards and disruptions caused by the pipeline project.
Expressing concern over the situation, the lawmakers insisted that urgent remedial measures must be implemented to protect the lives and property of residents. Adesanya emphasized that the Assembly would not hesitate to take decisive legislative action if authorities fail to intervene.
“We have seen the level of damage done here, and it is worrisome.
“The Assembly will ensure this matter is not swept under the carpet. If immediate corrective actions are not taken, we will have no choice but to take stronger steps in defense of our people”, he said.
Adesanya further stressed that the parliament has a duty to ensure infrastructural development does not compromise environmental safety or the well-being of citizens. He disclosed that the committee plans to convene another stakeholders’ meeting in the coming weeks to identify lasting solutions to the recurring challenges.
