The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has signaled a possible shift in his political trajectory, suggesting that his next move could be toward the Senate or Governorship, depending on the direction of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Obasa clarified earlier remarks about his political future, stressing that while he has personal aspirations, ultimate decisions must align with party consensus and leadership strategy.
“Every politician has ambitions, but you get to a stage where you cannot determine what comes next. If you believe in the party structure, you understand that it’s about consultation, consensus, and the leadership’s direction,” he said.
Obasa also appeared to rule out the likelihood of seeking a fifth term in the Assembly, hinting that his focus may now be on higher responsibilities. Asked directly if he would run again as a legislator, he responded, “Not really.”
His remarks come against the backdrop of mounting speculation about who might succeed Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu when his second term ends in 2027.
Obasa, who survived a political storm earlier this year that briefly saw him removed before being reinstated as Speaker, has been a dominant figure in Lagos politics. Since 2015, he has led the Assembly, representing Agege Constituency 1, and remains a powerful voice within the APC structure in the state.
With Lagos’ political succession debates already in motion, Obasa’s comments will likely fuel fresh conversations about his next move and the evolving dynamics within the ruling party.
