Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja was Friday installed as the 44th Olubadon of Ibadan land at the age of 81, culminating a 32-year journey that began when he became Jagun Olubadon on October 1st, 1993.
This historic coronation marks the first time a former governor and senator will ascend the ancient throne of Ibadan land.
Oba Ladoja has described his journey to the throne as bumpy and filled with trials, reflecting on his over three-decade climb through Ibadan’s traditional chieftaincy hierarchy, which uniquely requires aspirants to climb 36 carefully arranged steps.
Born on September 25th, 1944, Oba Ladoja courted many controversies in his journey to the Olubadan throne, particularly in 2017 when he stood alone with the then Olubadan against Governor Abiola Ajimobi’s attempts to elevate 21 Obas in Ibadan, challenging the move in court to protect the dignity and structure of the Ibadan chieftaincy system. His political career was often defined by principles that put him at odds with powerful figures.
It’s a culmination of a journey marked by unwavering principles and dedication to Yoruba culture.
