Bail application proceedings against a group of National Unity Platform (NUP) supporters were dramatically halted today after one of the accused, Sauda Madada, started vomiting blood in court.
Kanyanya chief magistrate Roselyn Nsenge was forced to stop the hearing, stating, “We apologise; it was not put to our attention. We are also responsible for these prisoners.” Madada, known as the “Inspector General of Police of NUP,” was visibly weak upon arrival, supported by six prison officers.
She was using a urinary catheter and retched up blood shortly after stepping off the prisons bus. Following the incident, the magistrate ordered that Madada be rushed to Mulago hospital, with her distraught mother.
Madada was arrested at the Uganda-Kenya border in Busia in September this year. She is being tried alongside 10 co-suspects, including Edward Ssebufu (alias Eddie Mutwe), NUP deputy spokesperson Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, and Doreen Kaija (principal of the NUP Leadership School).
The prosecution alleges that the group attended an unlawful military meeting or assembly on February 12, 2025, at the NUP offices in Makerere-Kavule, Kawempe Division, without ministerial permission.
The suspects’ previous attempts to secure bail were unsuccessful. In addition to her role in NUP, Madada was recently nominated as an independent candidate for Kampala Central Division Councillor after failing to secure the NUP party ticket.
