The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has apprehended a suspected railway track vandal in Lagos, reinforcing its commitment to protecting critical rail infrastructure across the country.
In a statement issued on Sunday, NRC spokesperson Callistus Unyimadu disclosed that the suspect was found in possession of 15 pandrol clips—specialised iron fasteners essential for securing railway tracks—which were allegedly removed from the narrow-gauge rail corridor at Alagomeji within the Lagos rail network.
According to the Corporation, these components play a crucial role in maintaining track stability, and their removal creates severe safety hazards, including the risk of train derailment and possible loss of lives.
The suspect, identified as Bashiru Hafeez, was arrested on Thursday, March 26, 2026, by security personnel from Multi Eye Security Services during a routine patrol around Mobolaji Johnson Train Station in Ebute-Metta.
Following his arrest, he was handed over to the Nigerian Railway Police Command for investigation and prosecution. He was later arraigned before a Lagos court and remanded at Ikoyi Correctional Centre pending further hearing. The case has been adjourned until April 24, 2026.
Reacting to the development, NRC Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Kayode Opeifa reaffirmed the Corporation’s zero-tolerance stance on vandalism, describing such acts as economic sabotage that threaten public safety and undermine national development.
He praised the alertness and swift intervention of the security personnel, while assuring Nigerians that the Corporation, in partnership with relevant security agencies, will continue to intensify efforts to track down and prosecute individuals or syndicates involved in the theft and destruction of railway assets.
Opeifa also issued a stern warning that anyone caught vandalising railway infrastructure or trading in stolen railway materials would face the full weight of the law.
The NRC further urged members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities around railway corridors, stressing that the nation’s railway system remains a vital public asset that requires collective protection.
The Corporation reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring safe, secure, and efficient rail transport services for passengers and stakeholders nationwide.
