The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has imposed severe disciplinary measures against Kwara United following the chaotic scenes that erupted during their rescheduled Matchday 22 encounter with Rivers United. Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi officially ratified the sanctions on Thursday, February 19, 2026, confirming that the Ilorin-based club must pay a cumulative fine of N9 million. The league’s governing body found Kwara United guilty of multiple regulatory breaches after a 1-1 draw at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl Stadium descended into a “war zone,” with home supporters unleashing violence upon visiting personnel and game administrators.
According to the official report, the “Afonja Warriors” failed to implement an effective security strategy, which allowed unauthorized individuals to breach restricted zones and target officials. The unrest began after Rivers United snatched a dramatic stoppage-time equalizer, leading to the physical assault of match referees and members of the Rivers United delegation. Notably, the General Manager of Rivers United, Chief Okey Kpalukwu, reportedly sustained serious injuries and required medical resuscitation after being beaten by the mob. The NPFL also cited the club for failing to prevent its supporters from holding match officials hostage for several hours within the stadium premises.
Beyond the financial penalty, the NPFL has significantly damaged Kwara United’s survival hopes by deducting three points and three goals from their current season tally. This sporting penalty for the assault on match officials further plunges the club into the relegation mire, dropping them to 19th place in the standings with only 12 fixtures remaining. Additionally, the league has banished the team from their traditional home ground in Ilorin; Kwara United will now host their remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
The NPFL has also directed the club’s management to identify and surrender the individuals responsible for the violence to the relevant authorities for arrest and prosecution. Kwara United has 48 hours from the receipt of the notice to file a formal appeal against these sweeping sanctions. While the club has issued a public apology for the “irrational elements” involved in the riot, the league’s uncompromising stance serves as a stern warning to other clubs regarding the mandatory standard of matchday security and fan conduct.
