Northern lawmakers and governors have expressed deep sorrow over the deadly fuel tanker explosion that rocked Essa community in Niger State, describing it as a preventable tragedy that underscores the urgent need for stricter safety measures in road transportation.
The inferno, which erupted on Tuesday in Katcha Local Government Area along the Agaie–Bida road, claimed the lives of at least 39 people, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Over 60 others sustained injuries, many of them with severe burns.
Two days after the harrowing incident, the Northern Senators Forum (NSF) issued a statement of condolence to the affected families and the government of Niger State. The Forum, led by Senator Abdulaziz Yar’adua, described the explosion as a national tragedy and prayed for the souls of the deceased.
“We are deeply saddened by this devastating incident and pray for the repose of the departed souls. May Allah grant them Jannatul Firdaus and comfort their families during this difficult time,” Yar’adua said.
Call for Tougher Safety Enforcement
In their statement, the NSF urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and relevant transport authorities to strengthen inspections on fuel tankers and other heavy-duty vehicles, stressing that such disasters are often preventable with the right regulatory oversight.
“This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the need for rigorous enforcement of safety protocols, especially for vehicles carrying hazardous materials,” the Forum noted.
Governors’ Forum Also Sends Condolences
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) also issued a separate message of sympathy to the families affected by the explosion. In a statement signed by its Chairman and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the governors conveyed their collective grief over the incident.
“We stand with the people and government of Niger State in this moment of sorrow. Our hearts go out especially to the bereaved families and those recovering from injuries,” the NGF said.
Governor AbdulRazaq also commended the emergency response teams for their prompt efforts in providing relief and medical support to the victims, while reiterating the need for better oversight in the transportation of combustible materials across the country.
“This incident is yet another painful reminder of the gaps in safety regulation that must be addressed,” he added.
Both forums echoed a shared commitment to supporting policy measures that will enhance public safety on Nigeria’s roads, particularly concerning the movement of fuel and other volatile substances.
