The Northern States Governors Forum (NSGF) has expressed shock and outrage over the recent terrorist attack at Kasuwan Daji Market in Demo community, Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State, which claimed the lives of at least 30 traders, including women, and saw many others abducted. The market was reportedly set ablaze, leaving the community in mourning and disrupting local trade.
Speaking for the Forum, NSGF Chairman and Governor of Gombe State, Inuwa Yahaya, described the assault as a “heinous attack on innocent citizens and a direct threat to regional peace and livelihoods”. He condemned targeting civilians carrying out their lawful activities, calling it morally unacceptable and an affront to communal harmony.
Yahaya urged security agencies to respond immediately, “We call on security forces to intensify efforts to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice without delay”.
The NSGF extended its heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families, the people of Niger State, and the affected communities. The Forum prayed for the repose of the deceased, the safe return of abducted citizens, and strength for the bereaved.
In a separate tragedy, the Forum also mourned a boat accident on the Yobe River in Garbi town, Nguru Local Government Area, Yobe State, which resulted in at least 25 deaths and 14 missing passengers. Governor Yahaya called for urgent rescue efforts, medical support for survivors, and a review of transportation safety protocols to prevent similar accidents.
He appealed to northern residents to remain calm, united, and supportive of one another in the face of these crises and reaffirmed the NSGF’s commitment to enhancing security, emergency response, and community protection across the North.
