Northern governors in Nigeria have called for heightened vigilance and stronger security measures after a suicide bomber struck Gomboru Market Mosque in Maiduguri, killing several worshippers and injuring dozens more.
The Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Governor Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, described the attack as a “barbaric, dastardly, and cowardly act aimed at instilling fear and undermining peace.”
In a statement issued on Thursday by his media aide, Ismaila Uba-Misilli, Yahaya expressed deep sympathy for the victims and extended condolences to the Government and people of Borno State. He stressed that targeting a place of worship is a grave violation of human conscience and religious sanctity.
“Such acts of terror only reinforce our resolve to stand united against terrorism and violent extremism”, he said, urging heightened security measures, especially around places of worship and public spaces during festive periods when large gatherings are common.
Yahaya assured the people of Borno of the solidarity and full support of the Northern Governors as security agencies intensify efforts to prevent further attacks.
“We pray that Almighty Allah grants eternal rest in Aljannatul Firdaus to the souls of those who lost their lives, comforts their families, and grants speedy recovery to the injured”, he added.
He also prayed for continued strength and wisdom for the leadership of Borno under Governor Babagana Zulum as it confronts security challenges with courage and resilience.
The Northern Governors reiterated their collective determination to support peace, security, and the protection of innocent lives, emphasizing that acts of terror would not break the spirit or unity of the region.
