The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has unveiled a proposed budget of ₦244,066,466,734.00 for the 2026 fiscal year, emphasizing critical infrastructural development, humanitarian initiatives, socio-economic recovery, and institutional strengthening across the North-East region.
The presentation was made by Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Mohammed G. Alkali, before a Joint Committee of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
The session was chaired by Barr. Kaka Shehu Lawan, SAN, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, and co-chaired by Hon. Usman Zanna, Chairman of the House Committee on NEDC.
During the session, Alkali also reviewed the budget performance for the year 2025, which stood at 100 percent of the total allocation received (₦131,836,332,912.00) and 59 percent of the overall budgeted amount (₦290,997,982,557.00).
Members of the Joint Committee commended the NEDC for its impactful interventions, particularly in the realm of infrastructural development in the region, affirming their support for the commission’s leadership in fulfilling its statutory mandate.
The committee urged the commission to enhance its bursary and scholarship programs to further advance educational development and to establish a comprehensive recovery framework aimed at restoring socio-economic stability in the North-East.
