Several Nollywood actors, including Wumi Toriola, Mide Martins, Afeez Owo and Ronke Oshodi Oke, have appealed to the public for financial support for small-screen actress Aunty Ajara, who is battling a life-threatening liver-related illness.
The appeal followed the circulation of a viral video on social media showing the visibly weak actress in a hospital bed, pleading for help. Ajara, who is pregnant, was seen on oxygen during the recording, underscoring the severity of her condition.
Shortly after the video gained traction online, a number of Nollywood stars took to their personal social media platforms to solicit donations and prayers for the ailing actress.
However, the appeals sparked mixed reactions online, with some social media users criticising celebrities for repeatedly turning to the public for assistance for colleagues while allegedly spending lavishly on social events.
Responding to the backlash, actress Mama No Network addressed the situation in a video shared on her Instagram page. She disclosed that colleagues within the industry had already raised over ₦5 million to support Ajara’s treatment but said her health has continued to decline.
According to her, the fundraising effort is not for publicity but a desperate attempt to save a life. She explained that Ajara’s condition is critical and requires urgent medical intervention, alongside continued prayers.
Mama No Network also revealed that although Ajara has been active in acting, much of her income has been used to care for her mother, who is reportedly battling a stroke. She added that the actress is not only pregnant but is now also facing complications linked to a liver illness.
Other entertainers who have joined the call for assistance include actresses Kemity and Bimpe Oyebade, actor Jamiu Azeez, and singer Lanre Alewilese.
The development has renewed conversations about welfare, healthcare access and financial security for actors working outside the mainstream spotlight in Nigeria’s film industry.
