The Nigerian Government has ordered the strict implementation of the “No Work, No Pay” policy against members of the Joint Health Sector Unions and Assembly of Health Care Professionals (JOHESU) participating in the ongoing strike.
The directive was issued in a circular by the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare (FMoHSW) on Saturday in Abuja.
Addressed to Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors of federal health institutions, the circular, dated January 8 and signed Disu Adejoke on behalf of the Coordinating Minister of Health, cited the continuation of the strike, which began on November 14, 2025, as the reason for enforcement.
“Hospital managements are to ensure strict compliance with the Federal Government’s ‘No Work, No Pay’ policy”, the circular read.
The directive, effective January 2026, applies to striking JOHESU members and any other health staff who may take industrial action. Health institutions have been instructed to maintain critical services, including emergency units, labour wards, and intensive care, using lawful means, including locum staff if necessary.
“All members of staff willing to work must be allowed to do so without hindrance or intimidation”, the circular emphasized. Hospitals are also tasked with ensuring the security of lives and property and providing regular updates to the ministry on service delivery.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining essential healthcare services nationwide despite the industrial action.
