The National Working Committee (NWC) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has dissolved the party’s executive committees in Kano State, affecting structures from the state level down to the ward level.
In a statement, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the decision was taken in line with the provisions of the NNPP constitution. He added that caretaker committees would soon be constituted to oversee the party’s affairs in the state on an interim basis.
Johnson noted that while the executive structures had been dissolved, the party remained grateful to all individuals who served at the state, local government, and ward levels, acknowledging their contributions to the growth and development of the NNPP in Kano State.
The development comes amid heightened tension within the party following reports of an alleged plan by Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC)—a move strongly opposed by the party’s national leader and founder of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.
Addressing party supporters at a recent gathering, Kwankwaso issued a stern warning to members contemplating defection, cautioning that political betrayal has never led to lasting success.
In a video of the meeting that has since gone viral, the former Kano State governor said he was not surprised by the reported moves, stressing that history offers clear lessons to politicians who abandon the party and the ideals that brought them to power.
“I want to remind those who have left us that nobody has ever betrayed us and succeeded. Political history is very clear on this. Anyone who believes they can rise by betraying the people and the movement that nurtured them should reflect deeply,” Kwankwaso said.
He also pointed to the large turnout of supporters at the gathering as evidence that the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement continue to enjoy strong grassroots support across Kano State, despite the ongoing political developments.
