The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has restated its commitment to revitalizing the country’s downstream oil and gas sector as part of broader efforts to enhance collaboration, drive efficiency, and ensure sustainable energy growth.
The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Bayo Ojulari, made this known on Monday during the opening ceremony of the 2025 OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week in Lagos.
Speaking on the conference’s theme, “Energy Sustainability: Beyond Boundaries & Competition,” Ojulari said the dynamics of the energy market are changing rapidly, and success in the downstream space now depends on collaboration, sustainability, and resilience, not just competition.
“At NNPC, we are committed to deploying additional infrastructure across the oil and gas value chain while revamping our existing downstream assets nationwide,” Ojulari said.
“These facilities will be accessible to partners for storage and product transportation, a move aimed at strengthening strategic alliances and deepening collaboration across the sector.”
Infrastructure Expansion and Energy Transition
Ojulari noted that recent policy reforms and fiscal incentives, particularly under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), have spurred growth and expansion within the industry.
He added that these developments call for new investments, innovative business models, and advanced skill sets, especially in emerging segments such as Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and mini-LNG projects.
“A combination of transparent policies and well-structured regulations has created a more attractive investment environment,” he said.
“To remain competitive, stakeholders must embrace new technologies and sustainable practices that drive both economic and environmental value.”
Call for Collaboration and Innovation
The NNPC boss urged participants at the conference to engage in constructive discussions that would help redefine Nigeria’s energy systems in ways that balance profitability with sustainability.
“We must forge partnerships that transcend traditional competition, explore innovative technologies, and support decarbonisation while ensuring continued economic growth,” Ojulari emphasized.
The OTL Africa Downstream Energy Week is Africa’s leading downstream and midstream energy event, bringing together international organizations, policymakers, regulators, operators, service providers, and consumers within the energy value chain to shape the continent’s downstream future.
